Scotland

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, and is seen as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It's known for its dramatic scenery, stunning castles, William Wallace, Celtic culture, tartan, haggis and whisky. I have visited Scotland only once in my lifetime, for a brief 2 day trip for New Year to Edinburgh. I would love to see some more of Scotland in the future.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the captivating capital city of Scotland. I have visited Edinburgh in the past for a brief New Year trip with my family. Scotland is famous for its Hogmanay celebrations. There is a lot to see in Edinburgh, and I would like to do another visit there at some point to see more of the eerie gothic and medieval architecture.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a mighty fortress and world famous icon of Scotland. We visited Edinburgh Castle during out family break to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Christmas Markets

The Edinburgh Christmas Markets are one of the best in the UK. The Edinburgh Christmas Markets extend beyond Christmas into the New Year, therefore, we were able to visit them during our New Year trip.

New Year Hogmanay Celebrations

One of the world's most famous New Year celebrations takes place in Edinburgh. The yearly event includes a street party, fireworks and live music. We managed to see the fireworks during our New Year trip to Edinburgh.

What I missed out on....

If I were to take another trip to Scotland, I would like to see more of the wonderful city of Edinburgh. Edinburgh is filled with fascinating architecture and history. It is also a good base for exploring some of the other parts of Scotland which are on my bucket list, such as Loch Ness, the Highlands and Invararey Castle. I would also like to stay near Inverness to see Dunrobin Castle, the Eilean Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye. I would also like to see some of the Macintosh House in Glasgow and the Isle of Mull.

Edinburgh Architecture

Edinburgh's Old Town has a fantastic array of architecture, with it primarily spanning the medieval to gothic periods.

The Witchery by the Castle, Edinburgh

Hidden within the depths of the historic buildings at the gates to Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery is the spookiest and most atmospheric restaurant and hotel in the city. I would like to take a visit to the Witchery on my next visit to Edinburgh.

Loch Ness

Loch Ness is one of Scotland's most famous attractions. It is best known for its dark, murky waters and the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. The loch is overlooked by the ruins of medieval Urquhart Castle.

The Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are a mountainous region encompassing northwest Scotland. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, filled with wildlife, such as the Highland cows, Highland ponies and Red deer.

Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle is known as one of the most beautiful castles of Scotland. The castle was built in the mid-18th century by the third Duke of Argyll.

Dunrobin Castle

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. The castle resembles the style of a French château, is one of the most beautiful castles in the north of Scotland.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland's most picturesque castles. It is located at the edge of its own island, with views of the Isle of Skye.

The Mackintosh House

The Mackintosh House is a careful reassemblage of the main rooms from the Glasgow home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a famous architect, artist and designer. He was a major figure in the art nouveau movement.

Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is a picturesque island located off the west coast of Scotland, renowned for its stunning scenery, rich wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. The Isle of Mull is home to Tobermory - a colourful fishing village along the coast, which is famous for the tv series 'Balamory'.

Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is the largest, and arguably most well-known, of Scotland's Inner Hebrides. Skye is famous for its rugged landscape, the colourful village of Portree, and the Fairy Pools waterfalls.

Goodbye for now Scotland!
