The Lake District

The Lake District is England's largest National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in Cumbria in the North West of England. The area is a well-known beauty spot, popular with tourists at any time of the year. I visited the Lake District for 3 nights as a solo traveller in the October for Halloween back in 2023. I would highly recommend visiting the area in October to see trees changing colour.

Lake Windermere

Lake Windermere is the largest, and the most well-known lake in the Lake District. One of the must-do activities when visiting Lake Windermere is to take a boat trip with Windermere Lake Cruises. Windermere Lake Cruises has a large fleet of modern and traditional launches and 'steamers', which operate throughout the day, with different routs to choose from. I took a trip on one of the boats on the Red Cruise from Ambleside Pier down to Bowness-on-Windermere. I also took another trip on the Green Cruise from Ambleside Pier to Wray Castle.

Ambleside

Ambleside is a picturesque vilage located at the most northern point of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. The village famous for its scenery and its association with poet William Wordsworth, and the writer and illustrator of the famous children's book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' - Beatrix Potter. I stayed at the YHA Ambleside Hostel for 3 nights during my visit to the Lake District in October 2023.

The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery

The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery is a family business situated in the heart of Ambleside. I stopped off at the Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery for some breakfast on my visit to Lake Windermere.

Wray Castle

Wray Castle is a Victorian neo-gothic castle which is situation overlooking Lake Windermere. I visited the grounds of Wray Castle during my stay in the Lake District, as it is offered as one of the stops on the Green Cruise.

Bowness-on-Windermere

The village Bowness-on-Windermere lies on the shore of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. The village is a popular tourist destination, home to a wide variety of outdoor clothing stores, cafes and galleries.

The Fizzy Tarte

The Fizzy Tarte is a stylish cafe and cocktail bar, located in Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District. I visited the Fizzy Tarte for some lunch and a cocktail during my visit to Bowness-on-Windermere.

Muncaster Castle for Halloween

Muncaster Castle is a historic castle located in Ravenglass in the Lake District, which dates back to medieval England. The castle is rumoured to be haunted. I visited Muncaster Castle during my stay in Ambleside for a Halloween event.

Derwentwater

Derwentwater is known as the jewel at the heart of the Lake District. The scenery is outstanding. I took a trip on one of the boat cruises with the Keswick Launch during my visit to the Lake District. The cruise lasts around 50 minutes and is the best way to see Derwentwater.

Lodore Falls

The Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa is a luxury 4 star Lake District Hotel on the shores of Derwentwater. I treated myself to a spa day and afternoon tea at the Lodore Falls.

Grasmere

Grasmere is one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District. The village has a wide variety of independent shops and cafes, and is certainly not short of surrounding majestic scenery. The village was once the home of the poet William Wordsworth.

What I missed out on....

Unfortunately, although I managed to see a lot in my 3 days, due to budget constraints, I still missed out on staying at some of the most well-known hotels. If I were to take another trip to the Lake District, I would like to stay at the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, and the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa.

The Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

Located in the Lake District near Windermere, the family-owned Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is a luxurious haven offering the ultimate wellness experience.

Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa

The Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa is a luxury Lake hotel nestled on the shore of Lake Windermere. One of the most appealing features of the hotel is the pool which overlooks Lake Windermere.

I had a wonderful 3 day visit to the Lake District for Halloween in October 2023. I wasn't blessed with good weather, but the scenery was still fantastic regardless of the rain.
